Coins for Change is an annual virtual charity that has allowed penguins to donate their virtually earned coins to various booths and stands placed around the Island. Club Penguin then gives two million dollars to real-world charities and organizations across the globe. Since this program started in 2007, Club Penguin has donated over 8 million dollars to charities around the globe.

History

2007

Starting December 14, Club Penguin officially decided to donate one million of their actual money earned from the purchase from Disney to various charities. They set up two locations on the island where you could donate your virtual coins for different causes. The three causes were to help children in need from around the world, help the sick who can not afford medical treatment, or the environment. Although all three causes received funds, the one with the most donated virtual coins received the most real world money. It was Kids Health. There were stands at 2 locations; one at the Plaza and one at the Beach.

There were cross-promotions aired on Disney Channel, before and during the event.


There were three charitable organizations that shared the $1 million donation, namely:

  • World Wildlife Fund (WWF) (for the environment)
  • Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (for children's health)
  • Free the Children (for children in developing countries)


The results as of December 21, 2007:

  • Kids Health - 44%
  • Environment - 29%
  • Kids around the world - 27%


The final results were-

  • Kids health - 39.4%
  • Environment - 33%
  • Kids around the world - 27.6%


2.5 million penguins donated and 2 billion coins were donated all together. The event ended on Christmas Eve.

2008

On November 10, Club Penguin officially announced that Coins for Change would be back on December 12, 2008. A donation bucket was added in the Captain's Quarters. Club Penguin also made a new page that you could access by clicking the Coins for Change stand and bucket on the home page. You can view it here.

There were three new charitable organizations that would share the $1 million donation:

  • Kids who are sick
  • Kids who are poor and cannot go to school
  • Kids without parents or who have been hurt by war

The final results were:

  • Kids who are sick - 30%
  • Kids who are poor and cannot go to school - 33%
  • Kids without parents or who have been hurt by war - 37%

2009

Coins for Change 2009 was already a great success on its first day. Members were able to buy a Coins for change station for their igloo and non-members and members were able to were able to get a free Coins For Change Background from Rockhopper. This year, over 4 billion virtual coins were donated.

The Final Results are:

  • Kids who are poor - 33%
  • Kids who are sick - 31.5%
  • The Environment - 35.5%

The amounts of money which can be donated are as follows:

  • 50 coins
  • 250 coins
  • 500 coins

Also there was a benefit concert called "Concert for Change".

2010

Coins for Change has returned for the fourth time in 2010. It was first confirmed in the What's New Blog by Billybob that it would start on the 17th of December, the same time as the Holiday Party 2010. Members could buy three different shirts in the Rockhopper's Rare Items catalog that represented the three options where the donated coins would go to. Non-members could obtain a Globe Hat from the same catalog. The three options were:

  • Build Safe Places
  • Protect The Earth
  • Provide Medical Help

The amounts of money which could be donated are as follows:

  • 100 coins
  • 500 coins
  • 800 coins
  • 5000 coins

The coins donated would go to the Lighthouse. Every day, the pile of coins would grow bigger. There was a glitch where a player with less than 5000 coins would choose the option to donate 5000 coins, and an error box would appear that says "You don't have enough coins". At the same time, the player would receive the Top Volunteer stamp, which requires the donation of 5000 coins.

The Final results are as follows:

  • Build Safe Places - 30% ($300,000)
  • Protect The Earth - 36% ($360,000)
  • Provide Medical Help - 34% ($340,000)

In total, over 12 billion (12,000,000,000) coins were donated.

2011

Coins for Change 2011 was confirmed by the book Club Penguin: Festa na Ilha! and in Membership Page. It started on December 15, 2011. Since it was the 5th appearance of the program, Club Penguin donated $2 million instead of the usual $1 million. The causes were the same from last year:

  • Build Safe Places
    • Your donation will help build schools, libraries, and homes for kids around the world.
  • Protect The Earth
    • Your donation will help protect endangered animals, rainforest, wetland and coral reef habitats around the world.
  • Provide Medical Help
    • Your donation will help create hospitals, health clinics, and clean water projects around the world.

The amounts of money which could be donated were as follows:

  • 100 coins
  • 500 coins
  • 1000 coins
  • 5000 coins
  • 10000 coins

If you donate for any cause, you would earn the Volunteer stamp. And if donated 5000 coins or 10000 coins, you will earn the Top Volunteer stamp and Epic Volunteer stamp, respectively. The campaign ended on December 28, 2011 and results were first revealed in a YouTube video by Club Penguin on December 30, 2011. The results were posted at the Beach on January 5, 2012. In total, 10.8 billion virtual coins were donated altogether.

The final results are:

  • Building safe places: $620,000
  • Providing medical help: $640,000
  • Protecting the earth: $740,000

2012

Coins for Change 2012 was confirmed in Club Penguin Magazine. It started on December 20, 2012. The causes were the same from last year:

  • Build Safe Places
    • Help protect endangered animals and natural habitats.
  • Protect The Earth
    • Help provide clean water and medical treatment to those in need.
  • Provide Medical Help
    • Help build schools and shelters around the globe.

Players were able to buy cookies for 100 coins to support Coins For Change and transform into Toy Car, Reindeer Puffle or Frost Bite.

There were donation counters in Coffee Shop, Cookie Shop and Snow Forts that shows the donations that were made. The counters broke on December 26, 2012 when donations passed 10 bilions of coins.

The amounts of money which could be donated were as follows:

  • 100 coins
  • 500 coins
  • 1000 coins
  • 5000 coins
  • 10000 coins

If you donate for any cause, you would earn the Volunteer stamp. And if donated 5000 coins or 10000 coins, you would earn the Top Volunteer stamp and Epic Volunteer stamp, respectively.

The results were posted on January 3, 2013:

  • Medical Help: $308,614
  • The Environment: $395,460
  • Safe Places: $295,926

A total of 13.7 billion coins were donated.

2013

Coins for Change 2013 was confirmed in Issue 423 of Club Penguin Times. It started on December 18, 2013. The causes will be the same from last year:

  • Build Safe Places
    • Help build schools and shelters around the globe.
  • Protect The Earth
    • Help protect endangered animals and natural habitats.
  • Provide Medical Help
    • Help provide clean water and medical treatment to those in need.

It was the first time that Club Penguin supported ten projects, which were unlocked as players donate coins. The projects are Toy for Tots, One Warm Coat, Global Penguin Society, Horn of Africa, Wildlife Conservation Network, Rare, Free the Children, Imagine 1 Day, War Child and Partners In Health. When a project is unlocked, penguins will receive a gift. For the first time ever, members were able to donate to the program by riding a train. Non-members can also donate coins as passangers on the member's trains.

There were donation counters in ClubPenguin.com, Snow Forts and Train Station that shows the donations that were made. On December 22, 2013 (on the fourth day of the party) the donations passed the last year total. On January 2, 2014, when the party was near its end, the donations were near the 25 billion of coins.

The amounts of money which could be donated were as follows:

  • 100 coins
  • 500 coins
  • 1000 coins
  • 5000 coins
  • 10000 coins

If you donate for any cause, you would earn the Volunteer stamp and the 2013 CFC donation pin. And if donated 5000 coins or 10000 coins, you would earn the Top Volunteer stamp and Epic Volunteer stamp, respectively.

The results were posted on January 2, 2014: A total of 25.1 billion coins were donated.

2014

Coins for Change 2014 was confirmed in Issue 475 of Club Penguin Times. It started on December 18, 2014 and ended on December 30, 2014. It was the second time that Club Penguin supported projects which are unlocked as players donated coins. This year, there were 4 projects:

  • Playgrounds: "Help us build safe places to play in the US, UK, Haiti, Afghanistan, and Argentina!"
  • Save Animals: "Protect the homes of ten different species! From cotton top tamarins in Colombia to the snow leopards of Russia!"
  • Libraries: "Help people learn and grow with libraries and learning programs for Ethiopia and DRC."
  • Schools: "Kick off real change! Bring better education to communities from China to Ecuador!"

For the first time ever, coins spent in the December 2014 Penguin Style were donated to the cause. Players could also donate coins completing the tasks of the Merry Walrus Party. There was a controversy fact that on December 29, one day before the party ends, there was 1 project that wasn't unlocked and the coins were near the 19 billion, well below last year's edition. But, on the same day, the amount increased from 19 billion to 26 billion coins, something that is very unlikely to happen in a few hours.

The amounts of money which could be donated were as follows:

  • 100 coins
  • 1000 coins
  • 10000 coins

If you donate for any cause, you would earn the Volunteer stamp and the CFC 2014 pin. And if donated 10000 coins, you would earn the Top Volunteer stamp and Epic Volunteer stamp.

The results were posted on January 5, 2015: A total of 26 billion coins were donated.

2015

Coins for Change 2015 was confirmed in Issue 528 of Club Penguin Times. It started on December 16, 2015 and for the first time ever, the donations ended during the Holiday Party, on December 26, 2015. This year, there were 4 projects:

  • Playgrounds: "Helps us build safe places to play!"
  • Save Animals: "Protect the homes of animals and their environments!"
  • Toys for Kids: "Bring toys to those in need!"
  • Hospital Package: "Make the stay at a children's hospital better by giving kids a gift!"

Like in the last year, coins spent in the December 2015 Penguin Style and in December 2015 Furniture & Igloo Catalog, for the first time, will be donated to the cause. Players could also donate coins by doing the holiday traditions around the island.

The amounts of money which could be donated were as follows:

  • 100 coins
  • 1000 coins
  • 10000 coins

If you donate for any cause, you would earn the Volunteer stamp and the CFC Pin. And if donated 10000 coins, you would earn the Top Volunteer stamp and Epic Volunteer stamp.

The results were posted on January 6, 2016: A total of 9.1 billion coins were donated [1].
